Crazy Rich Asians

Rachel Chu, a professor of Economics at NYU had no idea what she signed up for when she agrees to go to Singapore with her boyfriend Nicholas Young for his best friend Colin Khoo’s wedding. Nicholas is a History professor at NYU and the two have been in a relationship for two years. Rachel is flung into a world of couture, ruthless gossip, and unbelievable family expectations. Nicholas, raised to never speak of his family’s wealth, unintentionally draws Rachel into a den full of malicious lions ready to take a bite out of her. With an insight on the  story lines of all of his major characters, Kevin takes the reader on a roller coaster ride that will either leave you sick or itching to experience it again. I certainly understand the difference between rich and crazy rich.

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan dives into Asian Elitism and prejudice in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, mainland China and parts of South East Asia. Kwan also highlights prejudice against American Born Chinese or ABCs. The story takes us along different relationships. Familial, Work, Friendship and of course Romantic. With each chapter, he jumps the reader into a different person or persons while simultaneously maintaining the main storyline.

[SPOILER-Y ALERT]My favorite characters were Colin Khoo and Astrid Leong. Each from wealthy families, both characters comes face to face with the reality of depression and hiding behind a mask. Colin’s battle with depression isn’t well-known amongst his family or friends apart from Nick. While Astrid, plasters on a happy face while with her family,  she’s crumbling inside as she deals with her husband’s infidelity.

The story was fascinating! It was sometimes overwhelming. Some days, I felt like I was in the middle of a romantic comedy. Other days I felt like I was reading a research article. But I thoroughly enjoyed it every time I picked it up. I will admit that it took me a bit longer than usual to finish. And if you’re like me, you will probably refer to the family timeline  on more than one occasion just to keep up.

I intend to continue reading the trilogy. Be on the lookout for a review of Crazy Rich Girlfriend!
